If you open the cylinder and look at the frame, the model number should be stamped there.They list the 1D numbers starting in 1976 but the model 64 started in 1970. Now , the picture of the ser# appears to have two numbers scrubbed out. If that is the case it would date to 1973-1974. The tapered barrel was discontinued in 1973 so it is possibly a very early 1973 gun.With a few very rare exceptions, all Smith & Wesson firearms have the serial number stamped on the bottom or the front of the grip.
